OUR VALUES
We hold the following values as important to the operation of every aspect of the College:
Responsible
We embrace our responsibilities. Being responsible requires one to take ownership of their role in relationships, tasks, and environments and to initiate action where needed. Teaching responsibility will require gradual and structural allocation of responsibilities as well as investing in the self-confidence and esteem of our students to empower them.
Values require explicit teaching and practical implementation opportunities for them to become rooted in students’ understanding and practice.
“Taking responsibility is a commitment to own your life, to self-leadership, growth, and freedom.”
Respectful
We value respect. Teaching the value of respect starts with one’s respectful attitudes towards themselves, their students, colleagues and different viewpoints and ideologies. But this is only the start.
Respect is essential in all human interactions and any mutually beneficial relationship is based on the notion of respect. It is difficult to fulfil any purpose or achieve any outcome without firstly establishing respect.
Values require explicit teaching and practical implementation opportunities for them to become rooted in students’ understanding and practice.
“Respect for ourselves guides our morals, respect for others guides our manners.”
Empathetic
We believe in the power of empathy. The value of empathy involves one’s capacity to understand and share others’ feelings, beliefs, and perspectives. This can empower us to respect and appreciate differences.
Human beings are naturally self-centred and tend to think about themselves and their immediate needs before anything else. Empathy is a skill that we need to learn and develop which will benefit us throughout our lives. It will help us become more caring and compassionate individuals who contribute positively to the world. It also supports social harmony and can decrease the possibility of bullying.
Values require explicit teaching and practical implementation opportunities for them to become rooted in students’ understanding and practice.
“Empathy reduces aggression, boosts prosocial behaviours and maybe our best antidote to bullying and racism.”
Inquisitive
We commend an inquisitive mindset. Inquiry is the first step towards great explorations, engagements, and enlightenment. Guided curiosity in the form of well-designed and purposeful inquiry can help individuals achieve significant success at every stage of life.
Teaching the value of inquisitiveness will require a holistic approach to education where academic pursuits are not only driven by outcomes and a narrow definition of success but where there is ongoing recognition of individual inquiry, effort, and progress. Inquisitiveness necessitates an ingrained recognition of the significance of knowledge in benefiting and advancing humanity.
Values require explicit teaching and practical implementation opportunities for them to become rooted in students’ understanding and practice.
“Curiosity, especially intellectual inquisitiveness is what separates the truly alive from those who are merely going through the motions.”
Resilient
We strive to build resilient characters. Teaching the value of resilience requires us to understand and connect with students on an individual level and to provide them with support and encouragement when they face personal, academic, social, and other challenges.
Resilience is essential to a successful life, and we endeavor to teach our students the importance of facing difficulties with courage and determination. We know and appreciate that repeating, revising, re-drafting, and seeking constant improvement is the only way to gain and fulfilling achievements.
Values require explicit teaching and practical implementation opportunities for them to become rooted in students’ understanding and practice.
“When we learn how to become resilient, we learn how to embrace the beautifully broad spectrum of the human experience.”
